College of Herbal Science

Botanicals studied with rigour and respect.

The study of botanicals, herbal preparation, formulation and their responsible use within holistic and integrative wellness practice.

Overview

The College of Herbal Science offers foundational and applied herbal education: plant knowledge and identification, materia medica, the preparation of infusions, decoctions, tinctures and topical forms, principles of formulation, and the responsible use of botanicals within wellness and professional practice. The College teaches herbal knowledge with its limits attached. Learners study safety, quality, contraindications, interactions and the boundary between education and medical advice, so that what they make and recommend is defensible. Nothing taught here is presented as a treatment for disease, and practitioners are expected to work within their lawful scope and refer where care is required.

Our purpose

To teach herbal knowledge with the care it deserves: sound preparation, honest limits and responsible practice within a practitioner's lawful scope.

Within the University

Herbal science extends the University's integrative approach, pairing traditional knowledge with professional judgement.

Clinical Herbalism & Botanical Therapeutics™

The Clinical Herbalism & Botanical Therapeutics™ Program is a comprehensive professional education program designed to develop competency in the science, formulation, safety, and practical application of herbal and botanical preparations. Students progress from foundational herbal science and materia medica into plant constituents, formulation principles, herbal preparations, dosage and measurement concepts, safety and contraindications, client education, botanical product development, and applied herbal practice. Rather than focusing solely on memorizing individual herbs, the program teaches students how to think systematically about botanical formulation—why an herb is selected, how multiple botanicals work together within a formulation, how preparation methods influence use, what safety considerations must be evaluated, and how botanical recommendations should be documented and communicated responsibly. Applied coursework incorporates teas, infusions, decoctions, tinctures and extracts, infused oils, salves, topical preparations, herbal baths and soaks, and other botanical applications while emphasizing responsible scope of practice and evidence-informed decision-making. Graduates who successfully complete all academic and competency requirements earn the Certified Clinical Herbalist™ credential from KISSED University of Healing Arts & Sciences.
