TRI-102 Anatomy & Physiology for Trichologists

Anatomy & Physiology for Trichologists is a foundational science course designed specifically for students preparing for professional study in trichology and scalp science. Rather than presenting a broad survey of the entire body in equal depth, this course focuses on the anatomical structures and physiological processes most relevant to hair, scalp, skin, follicles, glands, tissue renewal, and whole-body support of healthy hair and scalp function. Students learn the language of anatomy and physiology, including levels of biological organization, homeostasis, and directional terminology used in professional documentation. The course then moves into cellular biology, the four major tissue types, skin and scalp structure, hair follicle anatomy, hair shaft structure, and the normal biology of hair growth and shedding. Throughout the course, structure-function relationships are emphasized so learners can understand how observable features arise from underlying tissue and cellular processes. The course also introduces the major body systems that influence tissue wellness, including circulation, lymphatic and immune function, nervous-system regulation, endocrine signaling, digestion and nutrient absorption, respiration, urinary regulation, musculoskeletal support, and reproductive physiology. These systems are presented as they relate to trichology, giving students enough whole-body context to reason accurately without overextending into unsupported claims or medical diagnosis. A strong professional emphasis runs throughout the course. Students practice accurate terminology, anatomy-based observation, responsible documentation, and referral-aware communication. By the end of the course, learners are better prepared to distinguish normal anatomy and physiology from findings that may require further evaluation, supporting ethical, evidence-informed development within the Certified Scalp Scientist™ curriculum.

What you will learn

  • Use foundational anatomical and physiological terminology accurately in trichology-related discussion and documentation.
  • Describe the major layers, tissues, and accessory structures of the skin and scalp and explain their basic functions.
  • Identify the major anatomical structures of the hair follicle and explain the functional significance of each structure.
  • Explain the structure of the hair shaft and relate fiber anatomy to observable properties such as strength, elasticity, porosity, texture, and breakage.
  • Describe normal hair-growth-cycle physiology, including anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen.
  • Explain how cellular activity, tissue renewal, circulation, immune protection, and endocrine signaling support hair and scalp biology.
  • Summarize the basic functions of the nervous, digestive, respiratory, urinary, musculoskeletal, and reproductive systems as they relate to whole-body homeostasis and trichology.
  • Apply anatomy and physiology knowledge to professional observation, consultation, documentation, scope-of-practice decisions, and referral awareness.

Who should attend

This course is designed for students in the Certified Scalp Scientist™ program and related learners seeking a trichology-specific anatomy and physiology foundation. It is especially appropriate for future trichology professionals who want to understand hair and scalp biology more deeply while developing scientifically grounded observation and documentation skills.
